Leading Muslim Theologians Provide Powerful Antidote for a Global Crisis

On April 2, 2009, on the eve of the Indonesian national legislative elections, influential Muslim leaders who form the backbone of LibForAll Foundation announced the publication of The Illusion of an Islamic State: The Expansion of Transnational Islamist Movements in Indonesia.

The exposé has generated major international media coverage by top wire services including Reuters, AFP and EFE, and in major news outlets based in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Bangladesh, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, France, Spain, the Netherlands, UK and the United States, among others. As several news articles have reported, the exposé’s authoritative and systematic refutation of extremist ideology makes it uniquely significant and valuable not only to Indonesian society, but worldwide.

“Truth that is not organized can be defeated by evil that is. So goes an old Sufi saying. Moderate Muslims in Indonesia are working to get organized for [an ideological] war with hard-liners who are misinterpreting the Koran as a political ideology that is driving the direction of Islam across the world.”

“Islamist groups originating from Saudi Arabia and Egypt are systematically infiltrating Indonesian mosques, institutes, universities and government, posing an even greater threat to the country than regional terrorist groups, according to a report by the LibForAll Foundation, a non-governmental organization promoting religious tolerance.”

“The study noted that the tactic of extremists was to gain influence in mosques or other institutions by, for example, offering financial help or even free cleaning services....  Sometimes professionals such as lecturers, doctors or teachers would also help to infiltrate institutions and ultimately gain control over them, it said. The report said a team of more than 30 researchers from Islamic universities and institutes covering 17 provinces was involved in the study.”

“A pathbreaking new report by the LibForAll Foundation, an anti-extremist nonprofit co-founded by former Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid, notes that PKS continues its effort to infiltrate mainstream Islamic organizations, and to replace Indonesia's tolerant, homespun Islam with an arid import from the Middle East.”

"In an effort to assess the impact and methods of Islamist influence, a consortium of some of Indonesia’s most prominent Islamic leaders, in collaboration with the LibForAll Foundation, recently released a report titled “The Illusion of an Islamic State: The Expansion of Transnational Islamist Movements in Indonesia.” The group argues that the extremist form of Islam in Indonesia is “a virulent ideology, backed by immense funding, and operating in a systematic manner, as transnational Islamic movements and their local agents work nonstop to undermine and ultimately seize control” of the nation.”

“...the findings will certainly have some bearing on the country's politics.”

“The Libforall Foundation is one of the rare success stories of an initiative in which moderate and liberal Muslims – too often the silent and disorganized majority – have organized effectively to counter radical Islamist groups by promoting democracy and tolerance.”
